Survived the Holocaust as a child in Lwów, hidden with his family, and went on to co-invent with Jacob Ziv the compression algorithms that made storing and moving digital data practical. The pair's 1977 and 1978 papers are among the most cited in computer science; their work runs, unnoticed, in almost every file transfer.
