After five seasons on Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s, Sandler built a run of broad studio comedies — Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy — that together with his later films have grossed more than $2 billion. He has occasionally stepped outside the formula to real acclaim, notably in Punch-Drunk Love, and in 2023 received the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
