Adele Astaire

American dancer and entertainer

1896 – 1981aged 84

Before her brother Fred Astaire was a household name on his own, Adele Astaire was the more celebrated half of their vaudeville-to-Broadway act, starring together in hits like Lady, Be Good! and Funny Face and becoming international celebrities during their London runs in the 1920s. In 1932, after a twenty-seven-year partnership, she retired from performing entirely to marry Lord Charles Cavendish and move to Lismore Castle in Ireland, turning down film and stage offers for the rest of her life even after his death in 1944.
