The S in RSA. In 1977, with Ron Rivest and Leonard Adleman, he turned public-key cryptography from an idea into something you could actually deploy — the reason two strangers can agree on a secret over an open line. Also broke the knapsack cryptosystem and co-invented differential cryptanalysis; a Turing Award in 2002.
