Adin Steinsaltz

Israeli rabbi and educator

1937 – 2020aged 83

A rabbi who made the Talmud legible to people who had never had access to it, producing a modern Hebrew edition with running commentary that was later translated into English, French, Russian and Spanish, followed by the Koren Talmud Bavli. The project, decades in the making, reshaped how the text is taught outside traditional yeshiva settings and earned him the Israel Prize for Jewish Studies in 1988.
