Adolph Zukor

Hungarian-American film producer

1873 – 1976aged 103

Arriving in New York from Hungary in 1891 with almost nothing, he built a fur business into a fortune and then reinvested it in an unproven idea — that filmed drama could be as respectable as the stage — producing one of America's first feature-length films, The Prisoner of Zenda, in 1913. His Famous Players Film Company, merged in 1916 into what became Paramount Pictures, pioneered the star system that made Mary Pickford and Rudolph Valentino household names; he remained the studio's chairman into his late nineties and lived to 103.
