Al Dubin

Swiss-American lyricist

1891 – 1945aged 53

Wrote the lyrics for some of the defining songs of Depression-era Hollywood musicals, pairing with composer Harry Warren on "42nd Street," "We're in the Money" and "I Only Have Eyes for You." Between 1932 and 1939 the two wrote roughly sixty hit songs for Warner Bros., including "Lullaby of Broadway," which won the 1936 Academy Award for Best Original Song — Dubin's only Oscar despite the size of his catalog. Born in Zürich to a Russian-Jewish family and raised in Philadelphia, he began writing for vaudeville performers at fourteen.
