Alan J. Pakula directed the "paranoia trilogy" — Klute, The Parallax View and All the President's Men — that defined 1970s American political thriller filmmaking, earning him a Best Director Oscar nomination for the Watergate drama. He had already been nominated for Best Picture as producer of To Kill a Mockingbird a decade earlier, and later adapted Sophie's Choice, drawing another Oscar nomination for its screenplay.
