A visual artist turned musician, Vega co-founded Suicide in 1970, a stripped-down duo of drum machine and synthesizer whose confrontational, minimalist sound anticipated punk and later industrial and synth-pop music by years. Suicide's early live shows were notoriously hostile toward the audience, a provocation Vega treated as an extension of his background in performance art.
