Alejandra Pizarnik

argentinian poet

1936 – 1972aged 36

An Argentine poet whose spare, obsessive verse — fixed on silence, the body, and the limits of language — has been called "one of the most unusual bodies of work in Latin American literature." She studied philosophy in Buenos Aires, lived in Paris translating Antonin Artaud and Aimé Césaire, and published her major collections, including Extracting the Stone of Madness and The Musical Hell, after returning home. She won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1969 and a Fulbright in 1971, and her work continues to influence generations of Latin American writers; she died by suicide in 1972 at age 36.
