Alfréd Hajós
Hungarian swimmer, footballer, and architect
1878 – 1955aged 77
Alfréd Hajós became the first modern Olympic swimming champion and Hungary's first Olympic champion of any kind, having earlier competed in track and field events including discus and hurdles. He went on to help field Hungary's first international football team in 1902, later worked as its referee and manager, and built a separate career as an architect — a rare double life as elite athlete and working professional in the Olympics' earliest years.
