Portrait of Amedeo Modigliani

French art dealer Paul Guillaume (1891–1934) · Public domain

Amedeo Modigliani

Italian painter and sculptor

1884 – 1920aged 35

Painted portraits and nudes with elongated necks and faces that looked mannered and strange to his contemporaries and sold for almost nothing while he was alive. Trained in the art of the Italian Renaissance before moving to Paris in 1906, where he mixed with Picasso and Brâncuși and spent his final years devoted mostly to sculpture. He died in Paris in 1920 at 35, of tubercular meningitis compounded by poverty and addiction, just before the market turned decisively in his favor.
