Amrita Sher-Gil
Hungarian-Indian painter
1913 – 1941aged 28
Amrita Sher-Gil began formal painting lessons at eight and had her breakthrough at nineteen with the oil painting Young Girls, launching a body of work that fused European modernist technique with the everyday life of Indian villages and people. Painting across Hungary, France, Turkey and India, she is now regarded as an important painter of twentieth-century India, standing alongside the pioneers of the Bengal Renaissance who preceded her — recognition that arrived largely after her death at 28.
