André Weil

French mathematician

1906 – 1998aged 92

A founding member of the Bourbaki group, the collective that rebuilt French mathematics on rigorous axiomatic foundations in the 20th century, and one of the era's most influential number theorists. His foundational work connecting number theory and algebraic geometry — including the Weil conjectures, later proved by others — shaped how both fields developed for decades after.
