Anne Frank
German-born Dutch Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim
1929 – 1945aged 16
Kept a diary, from age thirteen, of two years spent hiding with her family in a sealed-off annex above an Amsterdam warehouse during the German occupation of the Netherlands — a record of adolescence, fear and cramped domestic routine written while the family avoided discovery by informers and Gestapo raids across the city. The Franks were betrayed and arrested in August 1944; Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen the following spring, weeks before liberation. Her father Otto, the only survivor, published her diary in 1947; it has since been translated into more than seventy languages and remains one of the most widely read first-person accounts of the Holocaust.
