1926 – 2001aged 75

Anthony Shaffer trained as a barrister and worked in advertising before turning to writing, and found his signature work in Sleuth (1970), the twist-laden mystery thriller that won a Tony Award and was adapted into an acclaimed 1972 film. He also wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972) and the folk-horror film The Wicker Man (1973), scripts that showed the same taste for unsettling audiences that made Sleuth work.
