A Los Angeles musician who spent nearly a decade recording alone on an eight-track Portastudio, amassing over 200 cassette tapes before releasing any of it, and in doing so helped invent the lo-fi, hauntological sound that came to be called hypnagogic pop and chillwave. Albums like The Doldrums and House Arrest, first released on Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label, drew a cult following and made him a reference point for a generation of home-recording indie musicians.
