Arnold Lobel

Created the Frog and Toad series, four short-story collections that became a fixture of early-reader education by treating a childhood friendship with real emotional honesty instead of cute simplicity. His 1980 book Fables won the Caldecott Medal for best-illustrated American picture book, and he illustrated dozens of other authors' work alongside his own.
