Arthur Penn

American producer and director

1922 – 2010aged 88

A director who helped launch the New Hollywood movement with Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, using its stylized violence and countercultural sympathy for its outlaw protagonists to break from the moral clarity of studio-era crime films. He won a Tony directing The Miracle Worker on Broadway and received his first Oscar nomination adapting it for film, then went on to direct Little Big Man and Alice's Restaurant, both inflected with the same anti-establishment sensibility, before later producing Law & Order for television.
