Arthur Szyk

Polish-Jewish artist

1894 – 1951aged 57

A Polish-Jewish illustrator who turned medieval and Renaissance manuscript technique — rejecting modernism outright — into a weapon against fascism, publishing political caricatures throughout the Second World War that savaged Hitler, Mussolini, and Japanese militarism at a time when few American artists were making the war a subject. He settled permanently in the United States in 1940 and, after the war, devoted much of his remaining work to the Zionist campaign for a Jewish state.
