American illustrator

Barbara Nessim built a rare career as a full-time professional woman illustrator in 1960s America, contributing to Rolling Stone, Time, and New York Magazine while treating commercial illustration as fine art in its own right. In the early 1980s she taught herself to work with computers at Time Inc., producing some of the first digital art by a working illustrator; her 1991 installation Random Access Memories let viewers generate their own personalized catalog, anticipating print-on-demand years before the term existed. A 2013 Victoria and Albert Museum retrospective placed a hundred of her works in its permanent collection.
