Co-founded Home Depot in 1978 after being fired from a hardware chain, and built it into the model for the modern big-box home-improvement store, serving as CEO and chairman until 2002. His Marcus Foundation later put hundreds of millions into autism treatment and research and funded the Georgia Aquarium. He was also a major Republican donor, backing Donald Trump's presidential campaigns.
