Bert Kalmar

Half of a songwriting partnership with Harry Ruby that lasted more than three decades and helped define the sound of American musical comedy. Kalmar and Ruby wrote the score for the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers and contributed songs to Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, and other Marx Brothers films, including "Hooray for Captain Spaulding," which became Groucho's signature theme. Their standards "Who's Sorry Now?" and "I Wanna Be Loved by You" outlived the era that produced them, and their partnership was memorialized in the 1950 MGM musical Three Little Words.
