Born Samuel Wilder to a Polish-Jewish family in Galicia, he worked as a journalist and screenwriter in Vienna and Berlin before the rise of the Nazi Party sent him to Paris and then Hollywood in 1934. He wrote and directed Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, and Some Like It Hot, winning six competitive Academy Awards across writing, directing, and producing — a run built on scripts as sharp as his direction.
