Binyamin "Fuad" Ben-Eliezer, born in Iraq, rose through the Israeli military to become a general before turning to politics, where he served three decades in the Knesset and held the defense and industry portfolios as well as deputy prime minister. He led the Israeli Labor Party from 2001 to 2002, one of relatively few Mizrahi politicians to head a major Israeli party at the time.
