Appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2012 to complete Daniel Inouye's term after Inouye's death, Schatz became the chamber's youngest member and has represented Hawaii ever since, winning a special election with nearly 70% of the vote and being reelected twice. Before Washington he chaired the Democratic Party of Hawaii, served as the state's lieutenant governor, and ran a nonprofit social service agency in Honolulu.
