Bruce Jay Friedman

American novelist, screenwriter, and playwright

1930 – 2020aged 90

A novelist and screenwriter credited as a founding figure of the modern American "black humor" school, mining domestic anxiety and absurdity for comedy in novels like Stern (1962) and the story collection Black Angels. He moved fluidly between literature and popular entertainment, writing plays, screenplays, and acting, while drawing much of his material directly from his own life.
