Carl Foreman

American screenwriter and film producer

1914 – 1984aged 69

A screenwriter blacklisted in 1950s Hollywood over suspected Communist Party ties, who relocated to Britain and kept working, eventually winning the Academy Award for The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) — a credit he was denied at the time and received only posthumously once the blacklist-era writing credits were corrected. He was nominated for six Oscars in total and wrote High Noon, The Guns of Navarone, and Born Free, describing his recurring theme as an individual in conflict with a hostile society.
