American actress

An actress who trained under Lee Strasberg and used it to shock 1950s Hollywood: her performance as a thumb-sucking child bride in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll (1956) was so provocative it drew an Academy Award nomination and a Catholic Legion of Decency condemnation in the same breath. She followed it with Giant and a string of Westerns before becoming a sex symbol in The Carpetbaggers, then relocated to Italy in 1966 amid a contract dispute and built a second career in European genre film.
