Chaim Herzog

6th President of Israel –

1918 – 1997aged 78

Born in Belfast to Ireland's Chief Rabbi and raised in Dublin, he emigrated to Mandatory Palestine, fought in the 1948 war, and rose to major-general before turning to law and diplomacy. As Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in 1975, he responded to the General Assembly's "Zionism is Racism" resolution by tearing a copy of it up before the assembly, a moment that became one of the era's defining diplomatic images. He went on to serve two terms as President of Israel, from 1983 to 1993.
