Charles Lane

American actor

1905 – 2007aged 102

Played irritable clerks, judges and bureaucrats in more than 380 films across a 76-year career, becoming so familiar a screen presence that strangers would greet him on the street, certain they knew him from home. Frank Capra cast him repeatedly, in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life, and Lucille Ball made him a recurring foil across three of her sitcoms. He gave his final performance at 101, having reflected once that "they were all good parts, but they were jerks... it can mean considerable work for you."
