Stern is instantly recognizable as Marv, the more excitable of Home Alone's two hapless burglars, a role he followed with the buddy comedies City Slickers and its sequel. His earlier work included Diner and Breaking Away, and he later moved into directing, making his feature debut with Rookie of the Year. He has also voiced the adult narrator of The Wonder Years and, decades later, joined the ensemble of Apple TV's For All Mankind.
