David Axelrod
American musician, record producer
1931 – 2017aged 85
An American composer, arranger and producer who moved from staff production work in jazz to a distinctive solo sound built on heavily microphoned drums and baroque orchestration. His 1968 album Song of Innocence, setting William Blake's poetry to music that one critic dubbed "jazz fusion," became a foundational text for later hip-hop producers who sampled it for decades afterward.
