A British-American writer who spent decades trying to get permission to tell the story of King George VI's stammer, waiting until the Queen Mother's death before finishing the script out of respect for her wishes. The result, The King's Speech, won him the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay after he adapted it first for the stage and then the screen.
