Debra Granik directed Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone (2010), the film that gave Lawrence her breakout performance, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing it. Her earlier Down to the Bone (2004) starred Vera Farmiga, and she returned to that same spare, unglamorous register with Leave No Trace (2018), adapted from Peter Rock's novel My Abandonment.
