An actress who earned three Best Actress Oscar nominations in little more than a decade — for An Officer and a Gentleman, Terms of Endearment, and Shadowlands — bringing an unvarnished intensity to roles that could easily have tipped into sentimentality. She won the National Society of Film Critics award for Terms of Endearment, later moved between film, Broadway, and television, and starred in Netflix's The Ranch from 2016 to 2020.
