British architect
1914 – 2001aged 86
An English architect whose Royal National Theatre on London's South Bank became one of Britain's defining works of Brutalist design, its stacked concrete terraces a deliberate departure from theater's usual ornamental grandeur. Trained under Wells Coates and shaped by Le Corbusier, he tempered strict modernism with a classical sensibility drawn from earlier English architecture, and was elected a Royal Academician in 1991.
