A character actor whose gift was for caricature: the hedonistic, mother-obsessed Sylvester Marcus in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), and Lorenzo Saint DuBois — L.S.D. — the hippie actor cast as Hitler in Mel Brooks's The Producers (1967). He spent the 1960s sending up counterculture types with a precision that required actually understanding them, then kept working steadily in television into the 1980s.
