Eden ahbez

American songwriter and recording artist

1908 – 1995aged 86

Eden ahbez wrote "Nature Boy," the gentle, philosophical song that became a surprise No. 1 hit for Nat King Cole in 1948 after ahbez left the manuscript at the singer's stage door. He lived the words as much as he wrote them, sleeping outdoors under the Hollywood sign with his family, traveling in robes and sandals, and studying Asian mysticism years before the counterculture caught up with him, making him an unlikely forerunner of the 1960s hippie movement.
