Edgar Morin
French philosopher and sociologist
1921 – 2026aged 104
Born Edgar Nahoum, a French philosopher and sociologist whose theory of "complex thought" argued that reducing knowledge to a single discipline distorts it, influencing fields from media studies to systems biology. He held two undergraduate degrees but never pursued a doctorate, spending his career at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris and publishing more than 60 books, most still untranslated into English despite his stature across the French- and Spanish-speaking world.
