Edward S. Herman
American journalist
1925 – 2017aged 92
Edward S. Herman, an economist and media scholar, co-developed the "propaganda model" with Noam Chomsky in Manufacturing Consent (1988), arguing that ownership concentration, advertiser pressure and reliance on official sources shape what corporate media report as news — an analysis that became a standard reference point in media criticism. Herman was also seriously criticized, including by genocide scholars, for later writings that minimized casualty figures from the Cambodian killing fields and disputed the scale of the Srebrenica massacre.
