Edwin Montagu

British politician

1879 – 1924aged 45

A British Liberal politician who became only the third practising Jew to sit in a British cabinet, serving as Secretary of State for India from 1917 to 1922. He was the driving force behind the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, which produced the Government of India Act 1919 and committed Britain, for the first time, to eventual dominion status for India — a pivotal, if incomplete, step toward Indian self-government.
