Ehud Olmert became mayor of Jerusalem in 1993 after two decades in the Knesset, then succeeded Ariel Sharon as prime minister in 2006 when a stroke ended Sharon's career. His term was defined by the inconclusive Second Lebanon War, criticized harshly by the Winograd Commission, and by renewed peace talks with the Palestinians at the 2007 Annapolis Conference that collapsed with the outbreak of the 2009 Gaza War. He resigned in 2008 while facing corruption investigations.
