Eleazar of Worms

German rabbi

c. 1176 – c. 1238aged 62

A leading figure among the Hasidei Ashkenaz, the medieval pietist movement of the German Rhineland, and a disciple of Rabbi Judah the Pious, Eleazar served as rabbi and judge in Worms and instituted customs still kept in Ashkenazic communities today. His Sefer ha-Rokeach, a work on Jewish law and ethics that gave him his enduring epithet "the Rokeach," survives alongside numerous Kabbalistic writings, most of which remain only in manuscript.
