Elfriede Jelinek

b. 1946age 79Living

An Austrian novelist and playwright whose work is a sustained assault on her own country's comfortable amnesia about its Nazi past and on the violence inside ordinary domestic arrangements. The Piano Teacher is the best known; the prose is deliberately hard to like. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004, she did not attend the ceremony. Her Jewish father survived the war concealed as an essential chemical worker while most of his relatives were murdered.
