Roth became one of horror's defining directors of the 2000s with Cabin Fever and Hostel, films credited with helping launch the genre's "torture porn" wave and part of what critics dubbed the Splat Pack. He has since ranged into other genres, directing the Death Wish remake and the fantasy film The House with a Clock in Its Walls, while continuing to act — most memorably as the baseball-bat-wielding Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Inglourious Basterds. The Stanley Film Festival gave him its Visionary Award in 2013 for his contribution to horror.
