A former CIA analyst and Pentagon official who worked on Iraq and Afghanistan policy, Slotkin turned that national-security background into a political career, winning a competitive Michigan House seat in 2018 and the state's Senate seat in 2024. She defeated Republican Mike Rogers in a close race to become only the second woman to represent Michigan in the Senate, after Debbie Stabenow, and is expected to become the state's senior senator when Gary Peters retires in 2027.
