Else Lasker-Schüler
Jewish German poet
1869 – 1945aged 75
Else Lasker-Schüler was one of the few women at the center of German Expressionism, writing poetry that broke sharply from the formal verse of her time. She fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and spent her final years in Jerusalem, still writing, still publishing, until her death in 1945 — a career that outlasted the country that tried to erase it.
