Emma Sulkowicz became known nationally for Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight), a 2014-15 work in which the Columbia University student carried a dorm-room mattress everywhere on campus in protest of the university's handling of her sexual assault complaint, turning an ordeal into a widely discussed piece of performance art. Sulkowicz later stepped back from art-making to train in traditional Chinese medicine and now practices acupuncture in New York City.
