Roth won the Academy Award for adapting Forrest Gump into a screenplay and has been nominated five more times, for The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born, and Dune — an unusually long run of prestige adaptations that also includes Ali, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He earned a further Best Picture nomination as a producer of Mank, and in 2026 made his stage debut adapting High Noon for London's West End.
